Google Says Gemma AI Model Surpasses 150 Million Downloads

This information was posted by Omar Sanseviero, a developer relations engineer at Google DeepMind, on the social media platform X. He also noted that Gemma passed over 70,000 options on Hugging Face, a platform for artificial intelligence developers.

In February last year, Google presented a series of lightweight, open-source models of artificial intelligence, Gemma. At that time, the media, citing analysts, claimed that this product could be a kind of initial stage in the process of the emergence of a sleeker version of machine intelligence.

The tech giant claims that Gemma has strong efficiency considering its size. Google also stated that its artificial intelligence model produces larger functional systems of a similar category, such as Meta’s Llama-2, in tests on reasoning, math, and programming skills.

Sam Mugel, the chief technology officer of Multiverse Computing, said during a conversation with media representatives that smaller machine intelligence models are more portable and can be deployed for a wider range of tasks, including remote operations or devices with limited local storage. It was also noted that reducing the overall size of these models helps decrease the energy required to operate them.

According to data from StatCounter, Google’s share of the Internet search market was 90% last month. At the same time, this indicator decreases significantly when the company’s share in the artificial intelligence-based chatbot market is implied. In the mentioned space, Google Gemini’s share is 2.3%. At the same time, the same indicator of OpenAI’s ChatGPT is at the 84.2% mark.
