Stargate Project, a new company supported by SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle, and MGX, aims to invest $500 billion over the next four years to build robust AI infrastructure in the United States.
On January 21, 2025, OpenAI announced the formation of the new Stargate Project, which will build the firm’s new AI infrastructure in the United States.
The Stargate project was presented by U.S. President Donald Trump as one of the first initiatives in office. The initiative has national importance, aiming to secure American leadership in AI and create significant economic benefits for the country along with hundreds of thousands of new job places.
“What we want to do is we want to keep it in this country,” Trump said at the White House announcement. “It’s technology and artificial intelligence all made in the USA.”
The new company’s overall fund is $500 billion. The sum will be distributed over the next four years, with an initial $100 billion investment focusing on the immediate construction of data centres, starting in Texas. The company plans to expand its activities nationwide.
Stargate’s equity funders are SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle, and MGX. SoftBank will oversee corporate financial responsibilities, while OpenAI is responsible for operational aspects. Masayoshi Son, CEO of SoftBank, will serve as chairman.
The new initiative has found support in the tech industry. Its key technology partners include Arm, Microsoft and NVIDIA, next to the co-founders – Oracle and OpenAI. The partnership builds on the firms’ previous successful collaboration. For instance, OpenAI plans to expand its current use of Microsoft’s Azure, utilising the additional computing power to train advanced models and provide high-quality products and services.
OpenAI and NVIDIA also have a longstanding collaboration dating back to 2016 when NVIDIA provided the ChatGPT developer with its first DGX-1 supercomputer to accelerate AI model training. The tech giant has since expanded its offering with the most advanced artificial intelligence chips and software for running AI models, seeing its market cap topping $3.4 trillion.
OpenAI and Oracle have also recently established a strategic partnership. In June 2024, OpenAI selected Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) to extend existing infrastructure beyond Microsoft’s Azure AI platform and scale its operations more effectively.
The announcement partially confirms earlier media reports, which suggested the creation of an AI supercomputer called Stargate by 2028.
