PayPal’s money transfer service, Xoom, will enable Weixin Pay users to receive money directly into their Weixin Pay Wallet Balance or linked bank accounts through the partnership with Tenpay Global.
Tenpay Global, Tencent’s cross-border payment platform, has partnered with PayPal’s Xoom digital remittance division to enable the users of Weixin Pay in China to receive money from abroad directly into their virtual wallets or linked bank accounts.
The new service is already live and can be accessed via the Xoom or PayPal apps, or on their websites. It allows users of Xoom and PayPal in the U.S., Canada, and Europe to easily and affordably send money to their own or their family members’ Weixin Pay accounts. More countries are expected to be added to the service list soon. The recipients will get funds quickly, often within minutes, and use them for transfers, mobile top-ups, or shopping directly within the Weixin app.
Weixin Pay is another version of a popular mobile payment service known internationally as WeChat Pay designed specifically for mainland China users. It is built into Weixin, the Chinese version of the popular super app WeChat. Weixin Pay is used by over 1 billion people in China. Its popularity overseas is also growing due to expats, tourists and Chinese businesses, which expand internationally.
The service lets users make QR code-based payments in stores, send and receive money from friends and family, pay bills, top up mobile phones, book select services (like taxis, flights, or restaurants), and shop online or directly in-app, seamlessly integrated within the Weixin ecosystem. It even offers an innovative biometric payment system that enables customers to pay with their palms.
Wenhui Yang, CEO of Tenpay Global (Singapore), noted that the fresh partnership shows Tenpay’s commitment to linking the Weixin ecosystem with global markets and improving user experience. It’s not just about sending money abroad but also about meeting real-world needs like supporting family or covering daily expenses securely and conveniently.
While there may have been alternative ways to send money from the so-called Western economies to China and vice versa, a direct connection to Xoom is a valuable addition to the alternative list. PayPal’s money transfer service is used by more than ten million people worldwide. Xoom’s broad reach and rapid transaction speeds make it a key player in the digital remittance space. Besides, the service is well-known for its competitive fees and favourable exchange rates. Its focus on cost-effectiveness makes Xoom a popular choice for individuals sending remittances across the globe. Xoom’s being a PayPal service endows it with additional reliability, security, and integration with a broader range of digital payment options.
Paul Bances, VP of Market Development at Xoom, highlighted that the platform has always been known for fast and low-cost international money transfers. With the ability to now send funds to Weixin Pay users, Xoom is expanding its reach and continuing to help people send money to where it’s needed most.
The new service launches at critical times when US-China tensions aggravate against the background of mutual trade tariffs rising to unbelievable levels of over 80% and even 100%. It bridges major global financial platforms with one of China’s largest digital wallets, expanding international money transfer capabilities, and preserving the fragile link between Western fintech services and the Chinese digital economy.
The ongoing high tariff rates exchange between the US and China contributes to broader economic tensions and uncertainties. In this harsh climate, having a fast, secure, and affordable method for cross-border remittances becomes increasingly valuable. Consumers and families affected by these economic pressures can benefit from reliable access to fund transfers using familiar and widely used payment methods.
