Microsoft owns a large number of graphics processing units from Nvidia but does not use these products to develop state-of-the-art artificial intelligence models.
Mustafa Suleyman, Microsoft’s chief executive officer of AI, said last week during a conversation with media representatives that there are good reasons for the specified position. According to him, waiting to build artificial intelligence models that are three or six months behind offers several advantages, including lower costs and the ability to focus on specific use cases.
Mustafa Suleyman stated that it’s cheaper to give a specific answer once the company has waited for the first three or six months for the frontier to go first. According to him, the technology giant’s strategy is to really play a very tight second, given the capital-intensiveness of artificial intelligence models. Mustafa Suleyman arrived at Microsoft last year alongside other employees of the startup Inflection, where he had been chief executive officer.
In the context of artificial intelligence, Microsoft relies on cooperation with other companies. The technology giant gets machine intelligence models from San Francisco startup OpenAI and supplemental computing power from the newly public CoreWeave in New Jersey.
Microsoft has repeatedly enriched Bing, Windows, and other products with OpenAI’s latest systems for writing human-like language and generating images.
Mustafa Suleyman stated that it’s absolutely mission-critical that the long-term technology giant could independently do artificial intelligence. At the same time, he noted that Microsoft will have a close partnership with OpenAI at least until 2030. Also, according to him, the technology giant is focused on building its artificial intelligence internally. However, Mustafa Suleyman noted that Microsoft does not seek to develop the most cutting-edge AI models. According to him, the company has an incredibly strong artificial intelligence team and huge amounts of compute, and it is very important for it to maybe not to develop the absolute frontier. He underlined that it’s very, very expensive to do and unnecessary to cause that duplication.
It is worth noting that against the background of the active development of artificial intelligence, the issue of cybersecurity has become more relevant. Scammers also have access to AI tools. To counteract the corresponding threat in the virtual space, personal awareness of users is important. For example, an Internet search query such as how to know if my camera is hacked will allow anyone to get information about signs of unauthorized access to the device.
